Good Will Toward All, Written by KenTarbous

Wednesday, Nov. 23., 2011 - The emotion-filled holiday season coincides with the end of the tax year – a combination that fills inboxes everywhere with appeals from charities and other nonprofit organizations asking for donations to further their philanthropic missions and help fellow human beings.
Economic conditions have been particularly harsh on nonprofit organizations, especially social service providers such as food pantries and food banks, homeless shelters and mental health clinics.
“Charities are facing the tug of war between the increased demand for the services they provide but flat or reduced funding from most major sources, whether that’s government or institutional or individual philanthropy,” says Linda M. Czipo, executive director of the Center for Non-Profit Corporations in North Brunswick. “That makes for very difficult times for charities to pursue their missions.”
Linda M. Czipo
Nonprofit organizations range from soup kitchens, food banks and homeless shelters to theater groups, museums and beyond. There are more than 10,000 charitable organizations and 250 professional fundraising firms active in New Jersey, and more than one million operating charities across the nation.
At this time of year it seems as if every one of them is looking for help of their own. In addition to asking for your money, human services organizations are holding more drives for canned food, winter coats and other supplies as many of those charitable organizations function as a safety net for people struck by hard times and difficult situations.
“On a most fundamental level, charities are a very key part of what makes a community or a state or a society a good place to be and live,” Ms. Czipo says. “Charities provide services to people who are in need, whether it’s services for people living in poverty, health care, education for our children, environmental protection, arts or job training.”
Nonprofits are an important part of the social fabric of our communities, Ms. Czipo says, but charities also play a role in the state’s economy. Nonprofits in New Jersey employ approximately 7 percent of the workforce in the Garden State, more than many major industries, and those organizations buy goods and services, she says.
And organizations nationwide take in a great deal of money as well. In 2010, $290 billion was donated. Of that total the largest portion was given by individuals – 73 percent or $211 billion – followed by another 8 percent – or $22.8 billion – in bequests in individuals’ wills, according to Giving USA Foundation. So, if you’re in a position to do more than drop a dollar in the Salvation Army bucket, nonprofit professionals say it’s important to give to local and national charities.
Nancy W. Kieling
“ ‘Philanthropy’ is a word that most of the world doesn’t relate to, because they think it means Bill Gates or Andrew Carnegie. ‘Philanthropy’ actually means, in the dictionary definition, a love of other humans, and my belief is that most of us are endowed from birth with some concern for our fellow travelers,” says Nancy W. Kieling, president of the Princeton Area Community Foundation. “I would ask the question: ‘Do we have some responsibility for others who have less and should we be responding to that?’ At the end of the day, I think, people usually feel really good about making charitable gifts and being part of the solution instead of part of the problem.”
If you decide the time is right to make a donation to a cause you feel strongly about – like finding a cure for diabetes or breast cancer, eradicating homelessness or helping fend off hunger in your own hometown – make sure you spend some time getting to know the charity that will be cashing your check.
From time to time news media tell horror stories of bogus groups scamming well-meaning donors, whose money ends up not going to the cause they thought it was.
“Like a lot of things in life, the scare stories of nonprofits run parallel to the shyster businessmen and the bad actors in all parts of life, which is a very distinct tiny minority of players in the field,” Ms. Keiling says.
Making an informed decision is your best strategy, the professionals say. Most legitimate charities, because they value educated donors, will be forthcoming about how they are faring financially, how much of the money donated goes directly to their programs, and they’ll want to talk about the good they’re doing through their programs.
Online resources, like Guidestar.org, a nonprofit website that provides data on nonprofits and collects organizations’ tax returns (IRS From 990), and the Division of Consumer Affairs website, can assist in your research on whom you’re thinking about supporting. The DCA site has a searchable database of all registered nonprofits in the state.
For its part, the DCA warns would-be donors to beware of pressure to make an immediate donation, promises of gifts or prizes when you donate, or “sob story” solicitations. The state agency also cautions that you should never mail cash (send a check instead), never give credit card information over the phone to someone you don’t know, nor agree to have someone visit your home to pick up your donation.
Just how much support to give and in what form – whether it’s cash, a car, stocks and bonds that have appreciated in value, or through the creation of your own trust – are decisions that vary from person to person and family to family.
If you’re writing a check, see if your employer has a matching grant or matching gift program for qualified nonprofit organizations, which can increase the power and value of your gift.
But just make sure that it works with your situation.
Robert J. Bacino
“What I recommend to clients is that they consider giving to charities as part of a budget item that you may want to look at on a monthly basis, so that you’re not overextending yourself to the point where you are jeopardizing your future by supporting a cause you feel very much behind only to find out down the road that you are a little bit less further down the path for your own retirement,” says Robert J. Bacino, president of Insight Financial Services, headquartered in Flemington.
Beyond altruistic motives, people can create giving plans that maximize tax benefits. Donations to 501(c)3 organizations can be tax deductible, but individuals need to consult an expert tax adviser ahead of time, says Mr. Bacino.
“For individuals who want to make the most of their giving or make large donations, using a well-defined approach as part of a financial plan that incorporates a tax adviser can help to do more good than they thought was possible,” says Mr. Bacino, a board member of The Flemington Food Pantry.
But money isn’t the only way you can help.
“Many, many organizations welcome the involvement of volunteers or committee members,” says Ms. Czipo. “Maybe consider serving on a charity board if you’re really impassioned about a cause. Those are other ways you can have a significant impact on the well-being of an organization and the mission it’s pursuing.”
